The new airport is located approximately 11 miles northwest of downtown Panama City and is situated on 4,000 acres of land. The airport opened for commercial air travel on May 23rd, 2010. Construction of ECP began in 2007 and was completed in 2010. The airport was designed to provide an alternative to the overcrowded and outdated Panama City-Bay County International Airport. The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) was first proposed in 2006 as a solution to the increasing demand for air travel in the Panama City area.
